Genesis Innovative Project:  Whanganui Rotary
In the 1920’s a retired farmer, James McGregor collected trees from around the World and with the help of a community group, planted them in a reserve alongside the river to the south of what is now known as Kowhai Park.
Neglected until the late 60’s the Council cleaned up the area and it became a pleasant park.  That it contained a wide variety of trees was only evident to the observant.
The Rotary Club could see great value in developing the park as an arboretum.
  • A tourist attraction for the town
  • An educational opportunity for all
  • A recognition of the value of trees in the environment
First the trees had to be labelled.  Identifying the trees turned out to be quite a mission. Council had some sketchy records.  Whanganui took leaves and searched likeness on Wikipedia, consulted the city arborist and two local people with a wide knowledge of trees.  Trees were identified and gps co-ordinates noted.  They still have a few mystery trees.  Labels were designed and approval gained from the Council with a local Company engaged to produce the stainless steel labels.
There are protected trees and even some on the NZ registered list of notable trees.  Some are rare, some even described as “living fossils”.  All had been ignored for years.
