The District 9940 Centurion Club was inaugurated during the term of District Governor Judy Bain in 2003. Members of the Club are invited to contribute annually a minimum of NZ$100 to The Rotary Foundation. The $200k milestone of total contributions was achieved at the end of 2016. This method of personal contribution provides about 10% of the District 9940 annual contributions to The Rotary Foundation.

Each donor contribution receives a personal donation tax receipt from the New Zealand Rotary Clubs Charitable Trust who administers the transfer of all funds from New Zealand Rotary Districts to The Rotary Foundation. Accordingly a donation through the Centurion Club produces a tax refund entitlement of up to 33% to the donor.

The access to individual tax receipts is a significant benefit to individuals who become members of the Centurion Club. Most Rotary clubs contribute to The Rotary Foundation, but often their member contributions are consolidations of gifts and fund raising during the year. At least one club is currently planning to have all members enrolled with the Centurion Club, thus enabling their general fund raising ability to widen their giving in other areas.

Some Rotarians question the benefit to their clubs of donating through the Centurion Club. Donations to The Rotary Foundation from Centurion Club members ALL accrue to the contributions of their Rotary Club, and earn Paul Harris credits that can be used at the discretion of their Rotary Club (not the individual). This is a distinctive feature not found in other Districts in New Zealand.
