District Governor  Martin''s May Message
In the Rotary calendar, the month of May is Youth Service Month.  At our District Conference a week ago we experienced an excellent example of how we facilitate the development of young people when we heard of the experiences of our inbound and recently returned Rotary International Youth Exchange (RIYE) students.  It was particularly poignant when our Belgian exchange student, Gaëlle, thanked Sir Bruce Ferguson for his account of the return of the unknown soldier.  Gaëlle also represented the young people of Belgium when she spoke at the Anzac Day National Commemoration at Pukeahu National War Memorial.  We could not offer experiences like this to young people if we did not have a team of Rotarians working year round to plan and implement programmes like this.  Nor could be benefit from the sense of vibrancy that young people bring to our Rotary Clubs and the pride we have in their achievements.

Less than 3.2.Go  Wild About Rotary
April has been hectic for many of us with the weather events at the start of the month causing many extra hours of work, inconvenience and clean up. This month has also been hectic in the District with the final preparations for the annual Rotary  events that are District Conference and District Training Assembly in New Plymouth.

Rotary Youth Exchange
Do you know a young person between the ages of 16 - 18 who would love to go overseas.
This is what the Rotary Youth Exchange programme can offer our young people.   They leave NZ in January for 12 months and live with 3 or 4 host families where they become immersed in the local language, culture, school and general life.  It is life changing.  It is special.  It creates lifetime memories.

2017 Conference
DG Martin asked me to write a story about the 2017 conference held in New Plymouth 21 to 23 April but honestly I have had difficulty knowing where to start.
I could use the emotive’ s -  it was great, it was wonderful, it seemed everyone had a marvellous time; but for those who did not make it that will simply make you feel as though you missed out! So perhaps I’ll just run through some highlights and direct you to photos that have been put up on the district website.
The theme was “Celebrating our different journeys” Keynote speakers were Dame Susan Devoy, Race Relations Commissioner, Daniel Gamboa, President of the National Youth Refugee Council, Jamie Tuuta, Te Tumu Paeroa, Sir Bruce Ferguson, Brian Bourke and Dr Saowalak Rattanovich, RI President representative.

RAGES
Over the last 4 years I have worked closely with the Sabah Wildlife Department and Wildlife Rescue Units to contribute towards a long term plan whilst evaluating the community needs, the needs of the elephants and resources available.
 We have already found a corporate sponsor who donated towards the annual milk powder needed. RAGES purchased a container for storage and a commercial water blaster to eliminate cross contamination and marked out an area for this reinforced enclosure.  Under Rotary’s area of focus this project incorporates 3 priorities and I urge you to consider a donation.
 *  Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
*  Basic Education
*  Economic and Community Development

The request for Rotary support is from the Deputy Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department
 Members of the Animal Rescue team with Deb Mair and some of the elephants  Donations of milk powder from Fonterra can be seen as well

2)   Members terminated with effective dates on or before 1 July 2017 will reduce your club’s 2016-17 membership achievement, reduce your 1 July 2017 membership start number, and will not be billed on the 1 July 2017 club invoice.

Pounamu Gifts
At the conference some very special pounamu gifts, carved and provided by PP Terry Hignett from Rotary Club of New Plymouth North were presented to Dr Saowalak Rattanovich (our RI representative) and her husband Direck as well as DG Martin and his wife Denise.
 Pounamu for Saowalak ad Direck.
Terry is to be particularly thanked as the gifts were provided at no charge

The different one is Saowalak’s ‘heart’ shaped item.  It is made up of two different pieces of jade, the darker one is from Nelson area and the lighter usual colour is the ‘normal’ jade from West Coast/Fiordland.
 Direck’s piece has a silver fern on the front – presumed this piece would not be worn and more likely in a display cabinet hence the silver fern will help recognition of an item from New Zealand.

Did You Know?
Rotary Matters
We're probably preaching to the concerted when we say "Rotary Matters" but hopefully last Friday we had a few new listeners who have just heard this for the first time.
Four of our five clusters (who get the signal are involved with the radio show which was the original brainchild of Steve Lillyston.
Clubs take turns every month to run a one hour show informing listeners of what Rotary is all about and also giving listeners a run down on what the clubs are up to with projects both locally and abroad.  From fairs and concerts to the World's fight against Polio.
Guests last week included DGE Mitch Brown who urged visitors to "Go Wild About Rotary" with some seriously exciting plans just around the corner for all Rotarians in District 9940 and Val Ball who informed listeners on our recent and again successful Rotary Young Drivers Awareness (RYDA) programme.
