To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in 2021, Dr Stephen Clarke, a professional historian, has been commissioned to research and write a landmark publication on Rotary in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, 1921–2021. Dr Clarke started work on the book in last year. The book will be part of a suite of activities under what is called the Mana Tangata Programme to celebrate the Centennial. The programme will be formally launched later in the year. Hamish Dick, who is a student at Victoria University, is working with Dr Clarke over the university holidays as a research assistant. Hamish would like to make contact with each of the Rotary Clubs in our Rotary District and, at this stage, is looking initially for the following information:

  • Who is your Club Historian or the person responsible for your history and records?
  • Briefly, what is the range of your Club’s historical records, photographs and special memorabilia?
  • Does your Club have previous history publications (e.g. 50th, 75th anniversary)?

Could you please email this information to Hamish at the following email address:

research@rotaryoceania.zone

If possible, Hamish would be grateful to have these details no later than 15th February 2019 so he can provide Dr Clarke with this information before the start of the university year.

The Clubs in our Rotary District have made very significant contributions to local and global communities so please give this request your urgent attention.

This is a good opportunity for someone in the Club to take responsibility for recording the Club’s history over the past years. Once this is completed, can I suggest you consider putting the main points on your Club Website for others to see?

When emailing the information to Hamish, please copy our Public Image Chair Martin Garcia garcia.family@xtra.co.nz  into the email so we are aware of which Clubs have replied.

Many thanks for supporting this request.  It will be great to have a detailed overview of the part Clubs in District 9940 have played in Rotary in New Zealand over the last century.

For more details of the history project see https://rotaryoceania.zone/sitepage/mana-tangata-centennial-project  Should you have any queries please just let Martin know.

 Kind Regards
