This month is Growing Local Economies Month. In this COVID affected world this takes on particular significance. I have been talking to Clubs about how Rotary Opens Opportunities for us to make an impact in our communities in addressing economic, vocational or social recovery from COVID – encouraging Clubs to consider how they might use their talents, knowledge, influence and experience to address local issues.
Porirua Rotary has grasped this opportunity, applying for a District Grant to support an extension to Citizens’ Advice Bureau in a socio-economically challenged area. A Manawatu network under AG Venky Cannan’s leadership is exploring how Clubs can support Pacific island students who are likely to be stranded and unable to return to their home Islands once the Massey University year finishes. Rangitikei AG Ray Sisley is involved in this too. Venky has great ideas for support and wants to hear from Clubs who would like to explore this opportunity. While District Grants have now been fully dispensed for this year, Clubs may be able to share resources to support this initiative or others in your communities. Your AGs will be very keen to hear of ideas you might have. Please let me know if I can help explore resourcing.

IYM Online will run in the first week of the April school holidays over five half-day sessions. Places will be limited to 100 and the cost to take part is $30.00.
IYM Residential is for students from the Greater Wellington Region only. This will be based at Silverstream Retreat in Lower Hutt and will run in the first week of the July school holidays. Places will be limited to 40 and the cost to students to attend is $170.

Eastern Hutt and Petone Rotary Clubs Golf Tournament
This year (Thursday 12 November) the Rotary Clubs of Eastern Hutt and Petone have combined to run a twilight charity golf tournament in aid of the Te Omanga Hospice.
We would love your support this year and also ask for your assistance to publicise this to others. If you or your business can assist with donating goods or services for the after-match charity auction, please contact Jan Palmer (0274) 453-740 to discuss or donate.
We are restricted to 30 teams of 4, so early registration is recommended.
The Rotary Club of Wellington North invites Rotarians and friends to the fundraising matinee performance at Circa Theatre.
All profits will go to the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital.
Auction will offer generous support from the Mouth & Foot Painting Arts Association (MFPA) to help Rotary’s drive to eradicate polio.
The Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Association (MFPA) is an international registered society of disabled artists who, stricken with disease, accident or birth deformities that resulted in the unfortunate loss or use of their arms, create paintings by holding the paint brushes clenched with their teeth or held between their toes.
With over 800 artists from 74 countries, the MFPA instils in its artists a sense of self-respect and dignity that comes from earning an independent, honest, and secure livelihood through the sale of their artwork. The roots of the MFPA go back to 1956, when Erich Stegmann, a polio-stricken mouth painter, gathered a small band of disabled artists from eight European countries. This organisation has now grown and forms a great partnership here in New Zealand.
Porirua Rotary ‘People of Action’ during Literacy and Education Month
Porirua Rotary supported the Te Kura Maori O Porirua school to stock up on their English reading books for the secondary school English department during Rotary’s Literacy and Education month.
Over the years their stock has diminished and although they have replenished some class sets, the school has not been able to keep up with the wide range of preferences of the teenage students. Teacher, Sharyn Gibbons said, ‘It has been a positive experience to observe that there is a growing trend of avid readers emerging in our secondary school and we are keen to keep up with the demand’.
Both Levin and Taihape clubs were chartered in 1945. On the 26th of September we joined together in Levin to celebrate at the Council Chambers with a meal and entertainment.
We were joined by DG Gillian Jones and Kevin, AG Michael Fagg and Heather along with Rotarians, both past & present, and their spouses, representing both clubs.
We were treated to some wonderful historical stories recounted by both our past and present members.
Elder abuse is more common than you might think. Elder abuse is not specific to gender, religion, ethnicity, or income group. It may happen at home, and 76% of abuse is by a family member. We need to be aware that abuse of elders takes many different forms. The forms of abuse are: physical, psychological, emotional, neglect, sexual, financial exploitation and institutional/organisational. As a Rotarian you are unlikely to come in contact with elder abuse and neglect, but you should be aware.
Become a Centurion Club in our Centennial Year! DG Gillian is urging D9940 clubs to meet the challenge of becoming a Centurion Club this year.
This means that each Club member contributes $100 to The Rotary Foundation this year. This could be achieved through individual member contribution or by the Club contributing the equivalent of $100 per person, achieving a combined contribution of approximately NZ$145,000 this year. And some Clubs in our District contribute more than this each year! An achievement such as this would create a wonderful opportunity for all Clubs to stimulate our District’s District Designated Fund, with a percentage of this contribution coming back to our District, enabling us to support District projects.
